Chief Deputy Jim Barnes has made building a better Sacramento Community and protecting the public his lifelong commitment. As a veteran of 22 years of the Sacramento Sheriff’s Office, Barnes knows the nuts and bolts of the department, but he is also ready to implement his own vision in servicing the people of Sacramento. Barnes currently holds the rank of Chief Deputy of the North Division and is a graduate of the Los Angeles Police Department leadership program.

Throughout his distinguished career, Barnes has worked at many different levels of the Sheriff’s Office receiving numerous honors and recognition throughout his career. Barnes has been selected twice as “Employee of the Year” for his work as a Sexual Assault Investigator and Homicide Supervisor.

In addition to his duties as a Deputy Sheriff, Jim Barnes served as a Board Director for Division 9 for the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Department.

However, Barnes isn’t just about the work he does for the community while wearing the uniform. Barnes donates his time serving the community as a volunteer including his current service as President for the Non-Profit charity Pig Bowl-Guns and Hoses which has donated more than $1.5 million to local charities since it was created in 1974.

Barnes was one of the founding members of the “Be The Solution Commission” a group dedicated to bridging the connection between law enforcement and the community. The group’s goal is to create a neutral environment for community leaders to discuss issues affecting the community and influence positive change in the Sheriff’s office.

Barnes has a degree in Social Science from California State University at Sacramento, and lives with his wife Helena and has two children.
